I was born in Vietnam in 1981 and during that time, war was raging between the north and south of Vietnam. 3 months after I was born, my family fled the country and proceeded to Western Australia by boat as a refugee.
I’ve been living in Australia for my whole life and truly grateful for the lucky opportunities BOTH countries have given me.
During my early 20s, I followed the path of the typical advice given to me by many elders, go to school, get a good job, hold onto that job and you’ll be fine. So I went through schooling, made it into university and graduated six years later with a masters of science in software engineering.
I got into a job as a software developer and it had pretty good pay. It was then when reached age 24, I realized that I achieved exactly what was expected of me during my time growing up. I made it through school, I got my degree, I got a good job… And yet I was miserable in what I was doing, I felt like I wasn’t following my life purpose.
It was then a string of coincidences occurred, at the time, even though I had a job, I was still broke. I had only $20 in the bank, I was driving a rusty car that had water leaking through it, the window wipers were broken and on several occasions, the engine would overheat so whenever I would drive downhill, I would coast the car down the hill so it wouldn’t heat up the engine.
I also realized that if I were to stay in that job my whole life, even though my life would be comfortable enough to pay the bills and provide the basic necessities, it wouldn’t be fulfilled.
It was then I decided to go after the things I’ve always wanted to do, start a business, travel the world, write books, do seminars, create products and much more.
After 2 years, I quit that job and dove into the courageous world of entrepreneurism, the world of non fixed income, no steady monthly paycheck, no assurance of success compounded with never ending doubts and rejections that can fill up any pool of frustration. The only light at the end of the tunnel is the fact that you’re going after your dreams.
5 years later, I managed to have turned my life around so to speak and achieve the goals I’ve always dreamed about early on in life. Here are some of the things I’ve achieved when I started walking my own path.

What an inspiring story! Last year 2011, gave me a wake up call on what matters. Two deaths,my husband and my dad. I have unloaded non-essential activities from my plate. This year I would like to do the things that matter to me. At one point in time,I was able to publish a book, dedicated to my children who were getting married one after the other “Money Matters and the Married Woman.” That was 3 years ago. This year, I would like to write again. I would like to learn from you,on how to start my blog research on a particular topic I am familiar with, the growth of construction from the 1950′s. my grandfather started the sand quarrying in the 1950′s, my parents started their gravel and sand business after. I watched icons in the construction industry order materials from their office, and our family corp are now manufacturers of prefab housing concrete materials. How do I begin my blog? Appreciate your advice and more power to you!
Hi Ernestina, sorry to hear about your dad and your husband, I’m sure they are in a better place now. It’s great to hear that you’re writing again, writing a book is one of the most rewarding experiences that you achieve in your life. The title of your book sounds interesting
In response to your question, you can setup a blog by simply going to wordpress.com and go from there. It’s free and only takes a few steps to complete. Once you’ve done that, just keep writing and you’re on your way. Good luck and more power to you Ernestina!
Great story Khoa!We also have the same experience working as a software engineer but at the end of the day still broke. Truly, it takes courage and boldness to enter the world of entrepreneurism because there is no assurance of getting a good income but it is a path to freedom.
Thanks for sharing your story bro!
Thanks Edison! Glad to see we share the same experience! LOL
