In this article I’m going to draw from my years of experience and knowledge and show you how to set a goal and achieve it.
The biggest problem with most goal setting methods
One of the biggest problems with most goal setting methods is that there’s lots information out there that gives you different techniques and methods but most of them, don’t really work.
Unfortunately, we’ve heard of many different types of goal setting methods, there’s software, there’s iphone apps, there’s tools and theres systems.
In my opinion, you can literally change your life with just a pen and paper. This is my method is goal setting and that’s all I’ve used. The act of writing down your goals on paper will trigger a part of your brain that will attract opportunities your way.
Another disadvantage of using software and tools is that you’re dependant on that particular software or company. If you use a goal setting software for quite some time, what happens if the company suddenly pulls out that software, or makes changes to it?
Your goals will be put on hold.
One of the best things about using the old school method of pen and paper is that it gives you control, it gives you control over your destiny. Pen and paper will never crash on you, you can access it any time and carry it with you in your wallet to remind you of your goals.
How I started setting goals and achieving them
I first started learning about setting goals from a mentor of mine named Brian Tracy. Initially, I had no idea what goal setting was, my only basic knowledge of it was that you had an objective and you strive after it. Little did I know, there was a process or art of achieving a goal.
There’s so much more to simply having a goal and going after it.
Years ago, I remember I used to go for a morning walk around a lake near my old house. I used to plug in an mp3 player and listen to something that was motivational, educational and inspirational, this would always influence my day and make it a positive one.
One of the tapes that I listened to was about Goal Setting. I remember being blown away about how people can set a goal and achieve them. I started practicing the art of goal setting and achievement and as I look back, it’s amazing how this powerful skill can change your life.
To give you an example of how powerful goal setting is, here’s some of the things that goal setting has done for me in the past.
- I achieved the Australian dream and bought my own home.
- I travelled the world and visited many places such as Venice, London, Paris, New York, Shanghai, Hawaii, Amsterdam, Grand Canyon, Great Wall of China and more.
- I wrote and published my first book ‘How to increase your website traffic’ which is now in bookstores around the world.
- I signed my first autograph.
- I lost 20 kilos, going from 88 kilos to 68 kilos in 1 year.
- I overcame my fear of public speaking and trained over 2,000 people.
- I created my own products and sold them online.
- I bought a house and donated it to charity.
- and much more.
I’m not saying of those things to brag but to give you an idea of how mastering the art of settign goals and achieving them can change your life.
How you can get started in setting goals and achieving them
If you want to get started in goal setting, you’ll be surprised that you don’t need to spend a vast amount of money on software, equipment or any special tools.
The only items you’ll need to change your life is this:
A Piece of Paper
Once you’ve got your pen and paper, you can then begin to set goals like so:
1. Write down a major goal you wish to achieve that’s important to you.
2. Write down a deadline for that particular goal.
3. List all the steps it would take to achieve that goal.
4. Get to work on it every single day.
The above method may seem incredibly simple but don’t underestimate the power behind it. There’s no fancy applications, tools, features or latest trends. It’s the basic fundamentals of goal setting that’s been used for hundreds of years.
The fundamentals never change.
4 Tips when setting goals
Here are some tips when you are setting your goals:
1. Strong desire.
Make sure that when you are setting your goal, you’re incredibly passionate in it. You need to have a strong desire to get what you want. This desire will act as a furnace to drive you through all the obstacles and objections that will come your way.
2. Be realistic.
If you set a goal to become a millionaire in 30 days, that’s highly unrealistic. You need to set realistic goals. One way to do this is to break down your major goal into small chunks and then work towards achieving those small milestones.
3. Setup reward systems.
Setting goals and achieving them is a journey. It’s like a marathon, therefore along the way, always reward yourself for those small victories. It’s those small victories that help give you the motivation and momentum to keep on going.
4. Make sure it’s important to you.
Nothing is worse than spending years of your life working towards a goal when it wasn’t worth achieving at all. Therefore make sure you aim for a goal that will give you immense satisfaction in achieving it.
