One of the biggest secrets to succeeding in something in life is through intense focus in a particular area. Whether you’re working on an online business, trying to lose weight, want to save money or wanting to finish that project that’s due soon, nothing works as effectively as extreme focus.

Focusing in a particular task 100% is the master skill of any entrepreneur. You can’t get distracted when your working, if you do, you’ll lose your productivity and waste a lot of time. There are times when you’re in the zone and you’re working away, getting stuff done. But there are times when you’re not and you feel like you’re simply wasted that day.

Staying focused is one of the most toughest skills to master but it’s necessary in order for us to build successful projects. If it’s so tough to master, why is it that we are struggling to focus on a day to day basis?

The reason why many people struggle when it comes to focusing on something, it’s because we are currently being programmed on a daily basis on continual attention grabbing devices and material.

If you drive down a busy street, you’ll see a huge number of advertisements grabbing your attention. If you’re in a meeting, your phone will ring grabbing your attention. If you’re online trying to work while you’re on Facebook, someone will message you and they’ll grab your attention.

We live in a technology obsessed culture where devices and social media dominate our time. We are more interconnected than we ever have in the history of mankind, yet we struggle to stay focused on the most important tasks.

As Jim Rohn would say “some people major at minor things” This is so true because I’m guilty of working on the minor tasks to avoid the major ones through procrastination. The only way I would complete that important task is to sit down and focus on it for a full hour and i’ll make some progress. There is no way around it.

Examples Of Extreme Focus

I first discovered the power of the focus and finish technique when I was writing my books. The time when I published my first book, I noticed something when I was looking back at all the years when I was writing that book. Prior to writing that book, I was actually writing 3 other books at the same time. I was writing a money book, I was writing a computer book and I was writing small essays.

Each of those writing projects had some content in it but I never finished them. I kept on moving onto another project and leaving the old ones behind. I then finally got fed up and decided to just write a book and finish one topic.

This was extremely hard for me to do. Writing a book for 3 years and finishing it is extremely difficult, especially when there are so many other projects I could of worked on. However, the day when I finished writing the last page and submitted it to my publisher was the day that changed my life. I remember seeing my book being published and distributed across the world.

I was receiving cheques from my publisher and was earning passive income. It was great. This was when I learnt a very powerful secret.

“Nothing happens until you focus and finish something.”

All those half written materials never materialized. All those half created projects never generated any income. All those half attempted endeavors never did anything to my life.

It was only when you focus and finish something, you’ll get something in return. I may have the best idea in the world, I could of been the first person to come up with the Facebook idea, built it half way and moved onto another project. Nothing would of happened if I would have finished it.

Since learning the power of focusing and finishing, I’ve achieved the following:

  • Focused and finished for 1.5 years of going to the gym. Lost a ton of weight and revealed my abs.
  • Focused and finished all my books. All books are now selling and making money.
  • Focused and finished (and continuing) my blog for 6 months. Generating me passive income every day and increasing it’s website traffic.
  • Focused and finished my projects. I’m now conducting lots of speaking courses because I finished the content and courses.

I will now show you how I focus and finish my projects.

5 Steps To Stay Focused As An Entrepreneur

Below are a few things I do to help keep me focused. These techniques are always evolving but they still work. I’ve the same technique for years and it’s how I get the most important stuff done.

1. Pick An Important Project.

This is very important. Imagine if you’re doing all this work towards something that doesn’t need to be done at all. I’ve definitely wasted so much time doing the wrong type of work when I should be working on something else that will make a bigger difference to my life. Zig Ziglar once said that if you want to climb the ladder of success, make sure it’s leaning on the right building. He’s absolutely right about this. Pick a project that will make the biggest difference to your life. Nothing is worse then spending all your time, weeks and months on something that didn’t need to be done at all.

2. Break It Into Small Chunks.

Once you’ve selected your biggest project, you must now break it down into smaller goals that can be achieved. From my experience, a project will take approximately up to 10 small goals for you to complete and one small goal can be completed within a few days depending on the project. This is what you must do as well. Break down your big goals into smaller and manageable goals. When you complete these small goals, not only you make progress, you’ll begin to feel a sense of accomplishment and motivation which will propel you further into finishing all those other goals.

3. Allocate It.

Once you’ve got a nice list of small goals, the next step is to allocate each goal to your schedule. If you think a particular small goal will take a week for you to finish it, then allocate that one goal to be completed by the end of the week. This is very important. Challenge yourself and tell yourself that if there was one thing you must do by the end of the week is to finish X goal, then do it. Despite whatever interruptions you may have, you must finish that one goal by the end of the week. You can even break that small goal into smaller goals, so that it’s easily manageable each day. If that small goal requires 3 steps such as making a phone call, getting a contact and scheduling a meeting. Then those 3 steps can be broken down into 3 days. A phone call will take 5 – 10 minutes of your day. Getting a contact will take a few minutes on the phone. Scheduling a meeting will take another few minutes. Don’t try to do too much per day and overload yourself, just take it one day at a time.

4. Train Yourself.

This is absolutely critical. You’re going to zig zag your way to success. However, one way to stay on path is to continually do this for a long period of time. By practicing the art of focus and finishing all your goals, you’ll build a master habit that’s unbreakable. Imagine if you mastered this skill of getting all your most important tasks done every week. Imagine if you had 52 projects that would make a huge difference to your finances, health, wealth, family, relationships and more. If you mastered the art of focusing and finishing and have this master habit installed into your character, you’ll be 52 steps closer to achieving whatever it is you want. It doesn’t really take that many steps to get you closer to whatever it is you want and 52 steps is a lot of steps. Imagine if you did this for over 10 years? Where would you be? Imagine if your goal was to become a millionaire in 10 years? 52 steps x 10 years = 520 steps towards becoming a millionaire.

5. Do It Every Day.

This goes to the final step. Make a decision that you’ll continually master this habit of focusing and finishing your most important tasks for the rest of your life. You’ll definitely make mistakes, you’ll definitely fall off the wagon but you must get back on your horse and try again until you master this skill. It will take you some time to master the habit of focusing and finishing but the rewards are great. Traveling the world, being financially free, buying that house, saving for a big holiday and more. Focus and finish every day and you’ll build this master habit that all successful people have in their character.

The Master Habit

I’ve always believed in installing success habits into my life. Habits can either make you or break you.

By learning how to focus and finish all your projects, you’ll create this master habit that will stay with you for life. This habit will take you places where you’ve never dreamed of and you’ll become amazed when you look back and see how much you’ve accomplished.

Just focus and finish it.

Good Journey.
