During my early 20s, I noticed that I was doing alot of things that were “negative” towards achieving my main goals. For one, I didn’t have any goals, I didn’t know how to set goals and I didn’t know what to do with them.
I ended up just accepting many opportunities that came my way without any regard to what it would lead me to career wise. For example, I worked in a kitchen cleaning dishes, washing floors, pulling rubbish bins, I worked in a computer hardware company where all I did was review video games, I worked in schools where I was an assistant school teacher, I really had some random jobs back then.
It was until when I reached the age of 24, I started learning the power behind having good habits later on in life. Even though I knew about habits, I didn’t know what it would do to me years later.
For example, at age 24, I started reading books on success, business any any other subject that may help me in future. Little did I know, this became a really good habit that has grounded into me all these years. Whenever I traveled by car, I listened to success audio tapes. Whenever I traveled in public transportation or jogged around the park, I listened to the same audio tapes on my ipod. If I was on a lunch break, I read books. Before I went to sleep, I read something inspiring or motivational. I formed a habit of continual reading of positive information. One of the books I started reading was by Steven Covey “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” and I guess this was one of the best books at the time that was written about forming great habits.
It was 5 years later, going from pulling rubbish bins, broke and having no goals, I’ve managed to write and publish books, travel around the world, train over 1,000 people, built a small but profitable web design business and also given thousands away to charity.
I can honestly say that without those books and most importantly, the good habits of reading those books on a daily basis, I would of never achieved what I have today. I’m not saying that I’m the most successful person, but compared to who I was 5 years ago, I’m a completely different person, achievement wise.
Therefore, the lesson is this. Form good habits and you will reap the benefits. In my previous post “My 2011 New Years Resolution Weight Loss Achievement”, I wrote about myself starting from 87kgs in 2010 and only 7 months later, I’m at 71kgs. Once again, this is the true power of having good habits. Starting my weight loss challenge, I made a decision to go to the gym and to work out every single day. I also ate much less and replaced all fatty foods with better nutrition. I kept this habit going for 7 straight months and the result? I lost 16kgs, kept it off and feel much healthier.
Make a decision today to form a good habit and make sure you stick to it because very soon, you’ll be reaping the rewards.
